Hello TC.....

He may have lost or pawned his original medal, bought a second one and had the name taken off and his put on......

I as sorry to say that this is common..... Not always done by collectors but mostly done by the original owners of the medal.....

" easy enough to research and dissprove"

Back then it wasn't, and only until recent times has research been "easy".

There is no DA Ford in the QSA rolls for the IY.

The part that is baffling me is how could they put a fake name on a real medal? This medal does not appear to have been tampered with.

Does the medal have any value even though we cannot find the elusive D.A Ford

and what does the No 13 CY signify? The full inscription reads

No 13 CY Sgt Mjr D.A Ford 10th COMPY IMP YEO

Hello TC

Re-naming a medal is not beyond the wit of most jewellers - skim the rim and re-engrave new details. It is not uncommon.

I think the naming reads:

[Service Number] 13 Company Sergeant Major etc..

The medal and clasps [if genuine] is probably worth £60-£70.

Without sounding too naive, would it have been possible for our elusive D A Ford to have swapped regiments during war ? If medal is genuine I would presume that he was attached elsewhere for the Natal and joined the Imperial Yeoman at later date.

Thanks for advice

TC,

I think that would have been unlikely. Based on the evidence from the medal rolls, I would say D A Ford probably did not serve in the Boer War and afterwards renamed a medal to make it appear as though he did. As others have said, it was not an unusual practice. I have one group where the recipient awarded himself two medals! Of course the sad thing is that in doing this deed, he robbed someone of the record of their service in the war.
