W. Smith served with the 2nd Battalion, Royal West Surrey Regiment in South Africa during the Boer War, and was wounded at Spearman’s Camp on 21 January 1900.

Charles Alfred Beaks was born in Stepney, London, and attested foe the Royal West Surrey Regiment at Hounslow on 17 September 1894, having previously served in the 3rd (Militia) Battalion, Middlesex Regiment. Promoted Corporal on 15 July 1896, and Sergeant on 22 August 1899, he served with the 2nd Battalion in South Africa during the Boer War from 20 October 1899 to 8 June 1900.

Transferring to the Army Reserve on 1 August 1902, he was discharged on 16 September 1906, after 12 years’ service. He re-engaged for service during the Great War.
