WLSC did indeed embellish the truth to improve a story. He was not amongst the first men into Ladysmith on the 28 February 1900. The SALH was indeed part of the Earl of Dundonald's Mounted Brigade, but it was the Colonial Composite Regiment under the dashing Major Gough (later General Sir Hubert Gough of WWI fame) that led the way. The cautious Dundonald and the rest of the Brigade, including the SALH and WLSC, followed later. Dundonald's vacillations at the time even went so far as discouraging the only Imperial element in the Composite Regiment, the 2nd King's Royal Rifle Corps Mounted Infantry, from following Gough, thus allowing the Colonial's alone under this enterprising Imperial officer to end the Siege.

For the record, the Colonial units involved were the Imperial Light Horse, Natal Carbineers, Natal Police, Border Mounted Rifles and Natal Mounted Rifles. I do not know if WLSC mentioned any of them in his writings about the event. He may have disregarded them as being part of the "inconvenient truth".
