Good Afternoon Everyone......

The door bell rang this afternoon and I just about fell over..... A Christmas present purchased for me by S.W.M.B.O. from Australia arrived today, 5 days after it was mailed...... I thought that I would share the initial information with you.....

COLONEL MAURICE GREY PEARSON M.B., B.Sc. London, F.R.C.S., S.A.M.C.

With the set of medals came over 50 pages of military documents, disappointing though is the fact that his Boer War Documents, Natal Rebellion, and after 1942 documents are missing.....

A brief history.....

1899 - 1900 Served as 39 Private M. Pearson, Alicedale Town Guard, Medal

1900 – 1902 Served as Surgeon, Imperial Military Railways, Transvaal, MID

1903 Joined Natal Medical Corps as Lieutenant, promoted Captain and appointed Adjutant of the Durban Company.

1906 Natal Native Rebellion, Medal / Bar, MID

1907 Posted to the Reserve of Officers with rank of Major

1914 – 1915 German South West Campaign, in the rank of Major. Appointed Surgeon Specialist to Berrange's Column (Eastern Force). MID

1916 Appointed Officer in Charge of Surgical Division, South African General Hospital at Richmond.

1917 Appointed Officer in Charge 1st South African General Hospital, France, and Surgeon to Emergency Travelling Operating Team serving at No. 4 C.G.S. Near Poperinghe, Belgium.

1918 Officer in Charge, Special Femur Hospital, Edmonton, London, England.

1919 Awarded Officer of the Order of the British Empire (Military). Promoted Lieutenant Colonel.

December 1919 Transferred to Reserve of Officers in rank of Lieutenant Colonel.

1920 President Medical Appeal Board for 2 years.

1940 Appointed Honorary Colonel 1st Field Ambulance (Natal) South African Medical Corps

1940 August to 1942 July rejoined by invitation as Officer Commanding Military Block, Addington Hospital, Durban with the rank of Lieutenant-Colonel.

As soon as I get a chance to go through all of the papers I will write up a longer better article ......
She Who Must Be Obeyed has stated that I better not expect anything more for Christmas.....

Hi Mike,

Gosh..! You weren't on the naughty list then.

What and incredible group pair. I can't imaging how rare it is for both full and miniature groups to stay together like that.

Well done and thanks for sharing.

Cheerio,

Roy

My English tutor would have a thrombosis at the use of the word but that is splendiferous Mike! You might just have a long distance inter continental burglary...

Hi Mike

Remember there are few or none attestation forms for the Town Guards so the chances of any paperwork for his ABW service is almost non existent. The same applies to the Natal campaign - there are no attestation or discharge forms in existence for these chaps. The most you can hope for is a copy of the medal roll whereon he appears. There will also be a medal roll for his TG service.

The chap on the other Forum who questions the Transvaal clasp (or lack of it) - if there is no supplementary roll with his name on then he didn't qualify for one. The medal was issued off the Alice TG roll which had no clasps to any of the recipients.

Apropos his M.I.D.'s - here your best bet is the London Gazette or a dispatch written by the attending General where he was "seen"

Regards

Rory

Thanks Rory......

That's what I figured...... I have one page of the Alicedale TG medal roll where he is mentioned and the interesting thing is that nearly half of the names are struck through with the note that no medal issued.......
