Just been watching the two SAGS medals go under the hammer at DNW. Hammer prices of £6,500 for the Isandlhwana casualty and £70,000 for the Rorke's Drift defender. Wow!

It does rather spoil the hobby for normal collectors, but, interest rates remain so very low, people will seek alternatives and I really cannot see this from changing any time soon.

You're right, Frank. The trajectory does seem to be constant.

According to my records the Rorkes Drift defender is the highest price paid - nearly 100% over recent sales. The Isandlwhana casualty was a really good price, add in the extras and it is cheaper than recent examples sold by dealers.

Could we see more Rorkes Drift defenders surfacing to try and take advantage of this sale?

Not a good investment strategy to buy at the top of the market even with a testimonial from Bromhead.

I had suggested to my 'British' son that he interrupt the purchase of a house, and, instead, he divert 30-40,000 gbp to the purchase of the Rorke's Drift defender medal, proof again that I am on another planet when it comes to estimating medal prices. Fortunately, my son does not take me seriously (I wonder why?), and he chose to stick with the new house as planned.

A medal, be it a good example, will certainly not keep your son dry when it rains, he needs a roof over his head, a wise decision, I suspect.
