Together with two shooting Medals named to 'Captain J. W. Schimdt 1909' hallmarked for Birmingham.

Spink state 'Just 20 South Africa 1877-79 Medals were issued to the Keiskamahoek Volunteer Corps (Infantry), 4 of those were later returned to the Mint. 314 Cape of Good Hope Medals for Basutoland issued to the Cape Mounted Yeomanry. 135 Queen's South Africa Medals issued to the King William's Town District Mounted Troop.'

J. W. Schmidt is likely Julius Wilhelm Schmidt, who was born at Berlin, King William's Town, Cape Colony in 1863, the son of Carl Gustav and Maria Schmidt. He appears on the roll for the Keiskamahoek Volunteers as Julius Schmidt (Medal & '1877-8' clasp) and during the Boer War commanded No. 3 Troop of the King William's Town District Mounted Troop which hailed largely from Berlin and Kei Road. He is noted as seeing 'active service against enemy March and Sept. 1901.

Julius Wilhelm Schmidt died at Keiskamahoek, Cape Province on 10 December 1920.
