Frederick Stanley Marshland was born in Malta in 1865 and attested for the Medical Staff Corps at Aldershot on 20 February 1885, having previously served as a Chemist and Druggist. Promoted Corporal on 2 October 1889, and Sergeant on 13 July 1892, he was advanced to Staff Sergeant 2nd Class, Royal Army Medical Corps, on 30 June 1899, and served with the Corps in South Africa from 2 November 1899 until 6 April 1903. For his services in South Africa he was promoted Staff Sergeant on 30 August 1900, was awarded the Distinguished Conduct Medal, and was Mentioned in Despatches (London Gazette 4 September 1901). Returning home, he was awarded his Army Long Service and Good Conduct Medal per Army Order 75 of April 1904. He was discharged on 29 July 1908, after 23 years and 161 days’ service, the last four years of which were spent in the Nursing Section.

DCM London Gazette 27 September 1901: ‘In recognition of services during operations in South Africa. To bear the date 29th November 1900.’

MID London Gazette 30 March 1900 (General Buller), and 4 September 1901 (Lord Roberts). General Buller stated in his despatch: ‘The Ordnance Department has been short handed throughout and an unusual amount of hard work has fallen upon individuals and I submit the following in order of merit as especially deserving.’

George Francis Woodhall was born in Birmingham in 1866, and enlisted into the Corps of Armourers in April 1889, aged 23 years, a Gunsmith by trade. He served for a total of 21 years, including 1 year 2 months in South Africa, and 8 years 11 months in Egypt. Advanced Armourer Quartermaster Sergeant on 6 May 1905, he was awarded his Long Service and Good Conduct Medal in October 1907, and was discharged on 31 March 1910.

DCM London Gazette 27 September 1901.

Thomas Lysaght, alias Francis Costello, was born in Killenora, co. Clare, Ireland, in 1874 and attested for the Royal Munster Fusilier at Ennis on 25 May 1893. He deserted on 11 December 1896, and attested for the Royal Horse Artillery under the alias of Costello on 19 November 1896. He served with ‘U’ Battery in South Africa during the Boer War from 21 December 1899 to 26 June 1902, and was captured and taken Prisoner of War at Sannah’s Post on 31 March 1900. For his services in South Africa during the Boer War he was Mentioned in Lord Roberts’ Despatch (London Gazette 10 September 1901), and was awarded the Distinguished Conduct Medal for his gallantry at Blakfontein. He transferred to the Army Reserve on 26 April 1903.
