When you look at the "A's" on all the bars they are very similar so therefore all the bars are not correct??????
Maybe as stated it is a bad photograph......

Hello David,
I agree, certainly not the best photograph, but, I stand by my opinion, it is not always easy unless you actually have the medal in your hand, notwithstanding, from that picture, I would not be happy to buy it and at that price, it simply does not look original, in particular, the lack of "edge" on the left side.
I would much prefer to just go out to one of the London salerooms, they do turn up from time to time, although, they are not common.
Regards Frank

Quite frankly Mike, whilst it is not a good photograph, you can very clearly see the difference between the "A" in Laing's Nek and the "A's" in Elandslaagte, the difference between an original clasp, as below and the clasp on this particular medal are certainly noticeable.

Hello. I was the seller of this medal. I just found this website/forum when I was trying to research another one of my late father's collection. Let me give you a little background: my father passed away almost 6 years ago and left my mother and I with at least a thousand medals. He had started collecting in the 1960s. His love was BVMs but branched out over the years. Since neither my mother or I are experts in medals, we need to go off what the medal says or what his notes or catalog indicate. We list the BVMs on my mom's eBay account and the pairs, BWMs and QSAs on my account. I have found the National Archives helpful for the WWI era. If you have suggestions on how we should take better pictures, feel free to send me a PM. We use a camera that my mom has for everyday pictures.

He was a history buff with hundreds of reference books (he enjoyed researching and was considered by many an expert in many areas of WWI). I know he never knowingly bought a fake or altered medal, but with his eyesight failing and his belief that everyone was honest, I could see ones slipping past him. How I wished he knew of this resource or website before his death. He would have enjoyed talking with each of you as you seem as passionate as he was.

On a side note, the medal I am trying to research was issued to H.S. Lyons who, according to his notes, was a correspondent for the Daily Mail in Bloemfontein. My father never put the price he paid for a medal down as he did not want my mother seeing how much he paid for some of them but did in this instance.

I look forward to checking this site often for insights on the medals we have. Cheers.
