Ryan,

George Bowins enlisted in England on the 27th October 1879 for service in the CMR. He was 19 years old at the time.

He is certainly one of the more fortunate chaps to have received the LSGC medal as his page in DD7/60 shows 7 entries for being drunk whch was an unacceptable offence back in the day. His page confirms all the medals as shown and it shows that he took his discharge on what appears to be the 26th October 1909 after 30 years service !!

These books are very large and hard to photograph.

Doubtless, the odd blemish on a crime sheet was not judged as seriously as it would have been "at home". At the Cape, men would have been harder to keep on the rolls and thus a blind eye(s) turned.
To illustrate, here is a pic of a CMR group to "230 Pte-Sjt. J.Craigie" I illustrated some time ago.

Craigie's Record of Offences reads:
24/10/74 - Absent from Camp (6 days CB)
28/7/76 - Grumbling when ordered to sound the bugle (fined 5/-)
2/77 - Playing cricket on Sunday (fined 5/-)
8/77 - Absent from parade and Camp ( fined 5/-)
07/08/80 - Hesitating to put out a fire (reprimanded)
24/05/85 - Late on church parade (Admonished)
29/12/90 - Absent from morning stables (Reprimanded)

As you can see, nothing very bad (even if a couple of offences could have been taken higher).
Regards
IL.

Hi Ryan
Excellent acquisition!!
I'll scratch to see if I still have a piece of ribbon for you. Somewhere in my "Archives" should be a copy of the Issue Register for the Cape LSGC medal; just to find it!!
