You have a normal medal to a member of this regiment, which did not arrive in South Africa until late January, so it's members were certainly not present at those early engagements, Belmont and Modder River, with wretched Lord M, the regiment did not serve in Natal, the examples Mike refers to were issued for actual service with other regiments.
The clasps are correct and very clearly this man is entitled to all of them as well as his KSA and both Clasps.
I'd actually be rather surprised if this particular man had ever served as a Fireman in the IMR, I checked the available folio in WO97 but could not see him, he was discharged in South Africa, to, what was, in effect the "South African Reserve" I would think he had spent his required time with the Colours up to 1902.
So what sort of QSA is this, perhaps it is an engraved example?

FSburgher wrote: Hello Forum members,
I recently purchased QSA with 5 bars to 3627 Pte AA Shaw. 16th Lancers
Bars listed as follows:
RoK, P'berg, Johannesburg, D. Hill, W'bergen.
realising this lancer was an early entrant in the Western front, was he perhaps entitled to Belmont, Modder River and any SA bars?
Did this lancer qualify for the KSA?
Can any of the esteemed members confirm the Roll details please? Henk, Mike, Adrian, David??
Are there any photographs available?

Last year I purchased a book on eBay in Dayton Ohio titled 'The Mobile Boer' by Two Burghers; printed in 1902 by Grafton Press;
on the inside page are listed the following names Alan R I Hiley and John A Hassell.
I'm curious to know whether these are the names of the burgher authors or are they only the compilers ? Lots of interesting information listed in the book.
I'm looking forward to hearing from you all.
I find the comments and info shared here extremely rewarding. :) :cheer:

Cannot find the names Alan R I Hiley and John A Hassell in the list of Boers posted herein......

The names seem very English but that does not mean anything.....

Maybe they did not apply for their medals.....

I think that the photograph inside the book of both the authors is a bit of a clue! :)

Hi Frank
I have a researcher getting me a copy otf the !6th Lancer Medal roll. on the issue of the author of " The Mobile Boer"
I've taken a look at the photo again in the preface of the book "The Mobile Boer" and can't connect the faces with the names listed below, ie Hiley & Hassell???? Any clue about their identities?
I assume you have a copy of the book in your possession. I'm finding the information extremely thought provoking.
Especially the shooting of British soldiers in the back by their own comrades on Spionkop see pg 123. Your opinion?
Regards, Evyn

Both these two American volunteers served with the enemy as officers and clearly are the authors of the book, by their own admission, as very clearly shown on the title page, the photograph, clearly entitled, the authors, shows both in uniform.
Given that it was written, at the time, for their home audience, I don't consider the content too much.
